Choosing the Best Wood for Your Small Kitchen Table Set
The star of your dining set is a beautiful and functional small wooden dining table. Our Amish craftsmen build this collection of solid wood kitchen tables using a variety of American hardwoods. Choose your favorite from Red Oak, White Oak, Maple, Cherry, Walnut, Elm and Hickory wood. Each wood type is strong and durable, perfect for a small, extendable kitchen table.
Oak and Hickory wood have a prominent grain texture, often featuring rustic or farmhouse furniture styles. We use both Red and White Oak wood, as well as Quarter Sawn White Oak. Take the time to compare the grain texture and unique characteristics of each wood type to find your favorite.
You will see Red Oak often labeled as "Oak". This is the most common type of wood and usually the most affordable. Red Oak has a blonde, natural wood color perfect for Honey stain and other warm stain colors. We display painted Red Oak table bases with White Oak tabletops in classic farmhouse colors.
White Oak is a bit harder than Red Oak, with a lighter natural wood color. The grain texture is similar and many people find it hard to tell the two apart, especially with dark stain colors. You will see White Oak tables in mid-century modern styles and colors like Sand and Willowbend. Farmhouse tables often feature White Oak in Stone Brown or Cocoa Light stain.
Hickory wood is the hardest wood option we use, rating 1820 on the Janka wood hardness scale. Hickory wood is available as rustic grade lumber. This includes small, filled knots and adds to the overall rustic appeal. Select grade Hickory wood is a great option for traditional and formal styles.
Maple wood is another common option for Amish dining tables. The smooth grain texture and light color tone is a blank slate for many different table styles. Many black and wood dining room tables feature a Maple wood base with Ebony stain. This sleek, neutral color pairs with a wide range of tabletops.
We display several 2-tone tables featuring a Maple/Ebony base and Elm wood tabletops. The grain texture of Elm wood is feathery and exotic looking, a perfect complement to the dark base. Elm wood is a favorite for woodworkers, who appreciate the unique characteristics of the grain texture.
Cherry wood is similar in density and texture to Maple wood. The natural wood color is completely different though. Cherry has a natural reddish color, visible on light stains. Cherry is best suited for warm stain colors, the natural wood tones adding depth and richness.
Walnut wood is a wonderful option for contemporary styles and classic designs. The natural wood tones of Walnut range from light, grayish brown to dark chocolate brown. We often feature Walnut in Live Edge tables and mid-century modern styles.
Small Extendable Kitchen Table Styles
We display three different versions of our classic, small kitchen table with a leaf. All three versions are available as a fixed top or with one or more leaves. All three feature the standard tapered, Shaker style table legs. Other leg styles are available upon request, including square legs and turned legs like the Parson and Farm Leg styles.
The Lakeland Small Extendable Dining Table features a smooth tabletop, 1 inch thick of solid wood. We display it with a beveled edge on the tabletop and slightly rounded corners. This simple style pairs with almost any home design and we feature it in a wide range of colors.
The Camden Shaker Small Extending Dining Table is another version of the same table. Some color combinations feature a 1.25" thick, plank style tabletop. This is a classic option for farmhouse styles and rustic home designs.
The Easton Shaker is the third version of this small table. The Easton Shaker has a plank style tabletop with distressed edges and corners. All three versions are available in your choice of wood and color.
Standard table height is 30 inches high. Our small extendable kitchen tables are also available as counter height tables, 36 inches high. Create a cozy breakfast nook or pub set with a counter height table and matching bar stools. Bar chairs should have a 24-inch seat height to pair with counter height tables.
Other common styles for small kitchens include drop leaf dining tables and other small round pedestal styles. Browse our round dining table collection for more inspiration on circular tables.
Choosing the Best Chairs for a Small Kitchen Table
The best chairs for a small kitchen table will be proportionate to the table size. Our collection of small wooden dining chairs includes the Arlington, Kinglet, Fostoria, Windsor and Winston chairs. Each chair is handmade by Amish craftsmen using time honored construction methods. Amish dining chairs do not have weight limits!
For formal kitchen and dining spaces, we offer upholstered dining chairs as well. The Parson Upholstered Dining Chair is the smallest fabric style, perfect for narrow kitchen tables. All upholstered chairs include a solid wood frame, keeping the chair rock solid.
Pairing a Bench with Your Small Amish Dining Tables
Save even more room in your kitchen by adding a bench on one side of your small Amish dining table. All dining table sets are available with a matching bench. Benches are a great fit, especially for families with small children.
General rule of thumb is to keep the bench 12 inches shorter than the length of the table. This allows the bench to fit between the legs of the table and store underneath when not in use. Keeping the bench under the table adds more walking room around the table or allows the table to push against the wall.
Our extendable benches are a favorite complement to the small kitchen tables. These benches extend with leaves, just like your solid wood dining tables. Extendable benches come in standard lengths of 3', 4' and 5'. Each bench will double in size when fully extended.
Small wooden benches are versatile in other areas of your home as well. A bench is often easier to store than several extra wooden dining chairs. Add the bench to your entryway or hallway and pull into the kitchen when extending your table.
Narrow Dining Room Table Sizes
Our small, narrow kitchen dining sets start with the table at 36" wide and 48" long, perfect for 2-4 people and fit in anywhere. Rectangle tables are often the best small kitchen tables for small spaces. A 36-inch-wide x 48-inch-long table will self-store up to 2 leaves, easily opening with gear driven slides to accommodate 6-8 people.
Common Narrow Extendable Dining Room Table Sizes for 6 People:
- 36" wide x 48" long Rectangle - With 2 Leaves (Each leaf adds 12" - Extended Table Size: 36"x72")
- 36" wide x 72" long Rectangle - No Leaves
- 42" wide x 60" long Rectangle/Oval - With 1 Leaf (Leaf Adds 12" - Extended Table Size: 42"x72")

Caring for Your Amish Kitchen Table
The finish on our Amish furniture is a catalyzed conversion varnish. This finish is waterproof, UV resistant, and heat resistant to 220 degrees. We do not recommend wood conditioners or polishes, which often leave a residue on the varnish.
Simply clean your Amish kitchen table regularly to keep it looking good. Choose a mild detergent, safe for wood and wipe down to prevent dust buildup. Cleaners we recommend include Murphy's Oil Soap or Dawn dish soap.
