Customize Your Bookcase with Wood and Stain Options

One of the most important benefits of choosing Amish made furniture is the ability to customize fully. Larger retailers only offer pre-made furniture in the most popular styles and colors. We allow customers to choose wood species, stain color, size, style, and more.

Create the perfect real wood bookcase for your living room or office with Upstate Amish. Our team will work with you to find the perfect mix of design and functionality for your space.

Tailor Size and Design

For your custom built bookcase, start by deciding which size is ideal for your space. The standard size is between 72 and 84 inches tall for most of our styles. We also offer shorter 60 and 48 inch options for our classic Shaker bookcase.

The shortest option is ideal for those who want a small bookcase with more visible surface space. Ask us about custom sizes as well. We can edit dimensions of any style to perfectly suit your specific space.

Ask us about fully custom bookcases for family room furniture unique to your home. This includes wall to wall bookcase units with a desk or bed. We tailor these orders to the exact dimensions of your space to ensure the perfect fit.

We can include or exclude design details to match your preference. This could include tapered legs, paneled drawers or doors, and more. Ask us about other design ideas like a hidden door bookcase.

Choose Wood Species and Stain

Next, decide what grain pattern and color will look best in your home or office. Every available wood species is a solid, domestic hardwood. Options include: cherry, maple, oak, hickory, birch, elm, and walnut. Red oak, rustic white oak, and quarter sawn white oak are each available.

Ask us about rare woods we sometimes acquire. This could include claro walnut, flamed birch, or burl wood. Each bookcase in solid wood is long lasting and features detailed craftsmanship.

Different species have unique grain patterns that can drastically change the style of a piece. For example, consider natural hickory or white oak wood for a rustic bookcase. Choose our Amish quarter sawn oak for a more traditional bookcase.

For each species, we offer multiple stain colors to choose from. Deciding on a combination can be difficult, so below we list some of our favorite duos for different goals.

For a dark wood bookcase, we recommend walnut wood with our Cocoa Light stain. This deep brown color emphasizes the diverse, gorgeous grain pattern of walnut. Another excellent, more affordable option is maple wood with our Brown Velvet or Rich Tobacco stain.

For a light wood bookcase, consider maple wood with our Willowbend stain. The grain is smooth and flowing and the soft tones look excellent in natural lighting. Another option to lighten up any space is hickory wood in our Simply White stain.

Wooden Bookcase Styles with Open Shelving

Traditional bookcases and bookshelves feature rows of open shelving from the floor to the top of the piece. These options are perfect for displaying books and other, more decorative items. This could include small plants, picture frames, and other unique and compact objects.

Each open shelf bookcase from Upstate Amish is highly durable and functional. Our solid wood bookcase shelves have a high weight capacity for storing heavy items.

Traditional Amish Bookcase

Our most popular bookcase is in classic Shaker style. Simplicity and functionality are essential to this traditional Amish style.

This bookcase with adjustable shelves is available at 48, 60, and 72 inches tall to fit any space. Each size measures 36 inches wide and 13.5 inches deep. Of course, customers can edit these dimensions as needed.

This style is available in two variations: classic Shaker, and straight Shaker. The former features arched cutouts in the base and top for simple, subtle detail. The latter instead has a straight top and base for a more modern, minimalist look.

Either option is available with entirely open shelving or with two large doors at the base. This option is ideal for those who also want discreet storage for less attractive items like spare sheets and blankets or piles of paper. Unless edited, the doors feature basic paneling and handles or knobs at the top.

Modern Bookcase

Aside from the straight Shaker, we offer a couple other bookcases in modern style.

Brooklyn

The Brooklyn style is perfect for a contemporary, formal workplace. It has a sophisticated, luxurious look and makes an excellent black bookcase.

This luxury bookcase features flared sides that curve dramatically from the top all the way to the base for a highly unique look. The Brooklyn style looks best in a combination of maple wood with an Ebony stain and our rare flamed birch option.

Specifically, flamed birch shelving with a black base is an attractive option. To see this combination on the Brooklyn style, navigate to our Desks and Writing Tables collection online. Create a matching office set for a cohesive, sophisticated look.

Gilmore

Another excellent option perfect for a more casual home or office is our Gilmore style. This narrow bookcase measures only 23 inches wide, making it perfect for small spaces. The design features bookcase lights, glass shelves, arched cutouts, and smooth, rounded corners on the top.

The bookcase lighting gives this style a subtle glow for a refined, modern feel. The sleek design features three overlay drawers for a minimalist look.

Rustic Bookcase Styles

Tuscany

This style looks excellent in rustic white oak or hickory wood with a light, natural stain color. The Tuscany bookshelf features a platform base for a sturdy, solid look.

The design features four rows of open shelving above two large doors with paneling detail. It measures 84 inches tall and 42 inches wide for a rather large bookcase.

Riverton

Our Riverton style looks great in rustic hickory wood with a Willowbend stain. The natural burls and color variation give a charming, farmhouse feel to this bookcase. This style features four open shelves above two spacious, paneled doors.

With a couple edits, this style would work well as a mid century modern bookcase as well. The delicate, tapered legs and straight, clean lines are already in line with classic MCM style. Ask for no overhang on the top of the piece for a perfectly balanced, organic shape.

Then, choose walnut wood and slender, sleek handles to complete the look. Or, let us know if you have a certain design in mind and we can create a custom mid century bookcase.

Solid Wood Bookcase with Doors Options

Manchester

Our Manchester style is a luxurious, detail rich option for a bookcase with glass doors. It features a unique arched and tapered cutout base and excellent storage capacity. The glass doors each display a full arch design with a solid wood frame.

Behind the doors are four spacious rows of solid wood shelves. Beneath the paneled doors are two wide, paneled drawers for more discreet storage space.

This formal, elegant style looks excellent in maple or walnut with a dark, even stain. A highly figured grain pattern like that of elm wood would also be an interesting choice.

Wilmington

Another great option for a natural wood bookcase with doors is our Wilmington style. This option has a highly unique look with its dramatically arched, rounded top. The arched glass doors features a simple wood frame and open to three rows of shelf space.

Beneath the glass doors are two smaller, solid wood doors for even more storage capacity. The paneling of the wood doors perfectly matches the frame on the glass doors for a balanced look.

This style is certainly more modern with its simple detail and straight, square legs. A natural walnut interior and black maple exterior look excellent on this style.
