A variety of unique pieces are always on display inside our store. Customers can browse our in stock dining room pieces and bring them home on the same day. Comparing wood tones and grains in person is also helping in the purchasing process.

Below, we will offer ideas for mixing and matching dining seating options and highlight some of our favorite pieces. We will also compare chairs vs benches and focus on key differences.

Benches or Chairs for Dining Table Seating

Our wide selection of dining benches and chairs offer multiple options in a variety of styles. This includes classic Amish, formal, traditional, modern, mid century, and rustic.

An important detail to note is that some of our dining benches are expandable. For example, the Shaker Leg Bench is available at 36, 48 and 60 inches, each with three 12 inch leaves. This means the largest size can extend up to 120 inches long.

This can be ideal in a dining room that has an extendable table, but doesn't have space for the extra chairs. In this situation, having an extendable bench seat is ideal. Having extra individual chairs with no place to store them is inconvenient for any dining space.

Our non extendable dining benches are available in a variety of lengths to seat different numbers of people. Our 60 inch option seats three people comfortably and the 72 inch size seats up to four. Our largest size is 84 inches, which can seat up to five guests.

Our favorite way to pair dining chairs with benches is to have a bench on one side with chairs on the other and at the ends. However, another great idea is chairs on both sides and our 36 inch dining benches at the ends.

Deciding on a bench seat vs captain chairs is important for any dining space. However, we offer plenty of great options for both at Upstate Amish. Mixing chairs and benches is a popular look, even for more formal dining areas.

Chair vs Bench for our Favorite Dining Area Sets

Choosing a chair or a bench for your dining table can be a difficult choice. Factors like comfort and the level of access are important. Typically, chairs offer more flexibility than benches because they are easier to access for an individual.

For a dining table that often seats elderly guests and children, a bench may not be the best idea. This is because our benches are backless, so they offer no lumbar support. Row access can also be difficult for elderly and disabled guests.

However, choosing a bench on one side of the table and side dining chairs on the other is a common choice. This allows the more able bodied guests to slide onto the bench while others have a more supportive, stable option.

A benefit of a dining bench is that it occupies less space than a set of chairs. This makes it ideal for smaller spaces because guests don't need to pull out chairs but can simply slide into place.

Benches also allow for increased visibility for more complex tables. This is ideal for styles with an interesting, complex base like our Biltmore and Carlisle dining tables. With regular chairs, the details of the table base can unfortunately not be as visible.

Our Auburn Trestle Dining Table is a great example of this. The double pedestal base features X designs and a metal detail. The lack of chair backs offered by a dining bench make this unique base more visible from most angles. A bench paired with upholstered chairs at the end and solid wood side chairs make an excellent combo for this set.

Another great dining table and bench combination is the Alexandria set. This style features a curved metal detail and ringed double pedestal base on both the table and bench. It also pairs well with the Eagle side dining chairs that have metal along the chair backs.

Choose Our Solid Wood Benches and Chairs

Like our solid wood tables, our benches and chairs are 100% solid domestic hardwood. This means they have no veneers or laminates. Because of this, our Amish dining room sets are more durable and repairable than veneer alternatives.

If any of our pieces sustain damage over time, customers can refinish the furniture so it looks new. This isn't possible with veneer furniture, as the top layer of real wood would wear off to reveal plywood.

Each piece is handmade by Amish experts with years of skill. The heirloom quality, level of customization, and customer service are what make Upstate Amish the perfect choice. Our numerous 5 star reviews speak to the quality of our furniture and dedicated service.

Another benefit exclusive to us is our flat delivery rate of $199. We can ship your order anywhere in the continental United States for an incredibly low price. This includes delivery and set up at your home. Our team will carefully carry pieces into your house exactly where you would like them.
