How to Clean Amish Wood Furniture
Care and maintenance of our hardwood pieces is simple. One good idea is to regularly dust pieces with a soft cloth to avoid buildup of dirt and dust.
When spills occur, wipe them up immediately with a damp cloth and mild soap. Avoid using paper towels, as the abrasive texture can cause damage to your furniture finish and leave behind lint. Instead, use a lint-free microfiber cloth to clean your hardwood.
Use gentle cleaners to prevent damaging the finish we use on hardwood. We use catalyzed varnish to finish our pieces. While it is highly durable, it does not react well to abrasive chemicals. Avoid using harsher products like nail polish remover and bleach.
Learning how to clean wood furniture is not difficult, but does require proper maintenance. Keep your pieces of Amish furniture clean so they can preserve their natural beauty.
How to Clean Amish Furniture Made of Poly Wood
We craft all our outdoor pieces out of poly wood. Although it is highly durable and requires much less care than other outdoor pieces, dirt can buildup over time.
We recommend using a bristle brush or soft sponge with soap and water to clean your outdoor pieces. For more intense stains, you can also use a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser. Or, you can use a pressure washer on a low setting.
These methods can help you remove stains like wine, embedded dirt, bird droppings, and more. Poly wood has a tough surface and does not absorb liquids, so it is much easier to clean than other materials. This also makes it more difficult to stain and able to withstand harsher cleaning methods than wood.
Although poly wood requires little maintenance, you can check on it every 30 days or so to make sure it looks pristine. However, poly wood can also maintain its function and appearance if cleaned a couple times a year. This makes it perfect for vacation homes.
How Humidity Levels can Impact Amish Hardwood
While Amish solid wood pieces are durable, it is important to keep levels of humidity in your home stable. High humidity can cause swelling, warping, and cracking of the wood or even damage the finish. Low humidity can cause contraction and splitting or make the finish dry and brittle.
Try to keep your indoor humidity levels between 35-45% to prevent damage. Avoid placing Amish wood furniture near heating vents and radiators and limit exposure to direct sunlight.
How to Repair Damaged Amish Hardwood
To fix extensive damage or a buildup of small scratches and dents, you can sand and refinish an Amish piece. This is not possible with veneer furniture, as it needs the top layer of high quality wood. Our pieces are 100% high quality wood, so you can sand it down as much as is necessary.
For smaller scratches and dings, you can use walnut to repair the wood. The natural oils of the nut will fill and darken surface scratches, helping them blend with the surrounding wood. Just open a walnut and gently rub it along the grain of the wood. Let the wood absorb the oil for a few minutes and then buff the area with a clean, soft cloth.
