Our Most Popular 72 Inch Round Table
The Alberta Round Extending Dining Table is our most popular 72 round dining room table. It comes in the largest size we offer and is an excellent choice because of its solid, stable pedestal base. Skillfully crafted by our Amish artisans, it will stand the test of time in both function and appearance.
This sturdy table style is ideal for a 72 inch round table because the heavy, stable base makes the table hard to knock over. The pedestal base extends in four directions and has four pillars supporting the table top. These pillars intersect at the center of the base to form a cross pattern.
This Amish 72 inch round dining table is unique because it offers a built in extension mechanism. It contains a foldable, self-storing leaf that measures 18 inches. This allows for more seating in your kitchen or dining room when necessary.
You can also choose to order a solid, non-extending top for the table. Without the extra leaf, your table seating is about eight people. With the extension leaf, this increases to 10-12 people. If you are looking for a table to seat six people, we recommend browsing our 60 inch table collection.
All wood types we offer for the Alberta style are solid woods that are durable, beautiful, and make excellent dining room sets.
72 Round Cherry Amish Dining Table
Cherry wood is one of our most popular options for our Amish round dining tables. Cherry dining tables are unique because they develop a richer, deeper color over time. At first, it displays a light pink-brown hue and as it absorbs sunlight and oxygen, it changes to a darker red-brown color.
This process, oxidation, takes 6 months to a year to reach 80% of the total color change. The hue will deepen even more after one year. This is dependent on the level of exposure to light and oxygen. It can take several years for the exquisite patina of cherry wood to fully develop.
We consider cherry wood one of the most beautiful solid woods not only because of its color but its grain pattern as well. Sap cherry lumber has the most variation in color and can display wavy or curly grain patterns. This is because of the mineral streaks, burls, and gum pockets that give sap cherry wood a unique pattern.
Pieces we craft from sap cherry wood are different from heartwood because we take the wood from the lumber close to the bark. This means there is less consistency overall in color and grain pattern. We take heartwood lumber from the center of the tree and it is more reddish in color and has less variation in grain pattern.
Both sap wood and heart wood are excellent choices for 72 round dining table wood. However, heart wood is more expensive because there is simply less of it than sap wood. Come by our store to see both kinds of cherry wood in person and decide which you prefer.
Other Solid Wood 72" Round Dining Table Options
While cherry wood is a popular, eye catching choice for a dining table, it is not the only beautiful wood we offer. Oak wood is also an excellent choice. Compared to cherry wood, our white oak is sturdier and less porous. This means it is water resistant, which is ideal for a kitchen or dining table where spilled drinks are common.
White oak is one of our more expensive options, but is a great choice for a lighter color palette. If you can't decide between cherry and white oak for your dining table, you can choose the Michael's Cherry stain on white oak. This combines the appearance of cherry wood and the durability and water resistance of white oak.
We also offer a variety of maple woods. You can choose from 12 stain options ranging from a sand hue, to a rich asbury brown maple, to a dark ebony color. The grain pattern of maple wood is typically straight and fine, creating a smooth and even texture. However, variations in tree growth can make a more curly or wavy pattern.
Last but not least is our natural rustic walnut lumber option for the Alberta Round Extending Dining Table. Walnut is our most expensive option because it is rarer than other woods and in high demand. Its colors is a beautiful dark brown and its grain pattern varies with each piece. It can be straight and uniform or more curly and wavy, like cherry wood.

How to Care for an Amish 72 Round Table
Amish solid hardwood requires little maintenance. We recommend dusting regularly and cleaning spills and stains immediately. Protect the surface of the wood from water rings by using coasters and trivets. Rather than using harsh chemicals that risk damaging the finish, clean with gentler products.
To prevent damage to your hardwood, limit exposure to sunlight, as this can cause the color to fade or darken. Also, distance the furniture from radiators and other items that cause change in temperature. Failure can result in warping or cracking of the wood.
You can repair minor scratches and dents by sanding and refinishing the wood. This is usually impossible for veneer furniture, giving solid hardwood an advantage.
We use a catalyzed varnish on our solid wood items. This finish is durable, waterproof, UV resistant, and heat resistant. Catalyzed conversion varnish is less vulnerable to scratches, stains, and water rings. It also excels at protecting the natural color and texture of the wood over time.
Because of our high quality varnish, caring for our Amish hardwood is never difficult.
Why is Solid Wood Best for a 72 Inch Round Dining Table?
Solid wood is a better choice for a dining table than veneer wood for various reasons. Veneer wood dining tables display an expensive wood like walnut glued to a cheaper material like plywood. While this is less expensive than buying solid wood furniture, it comes with considerable downsides.
Veneer wood is not ideal for heavy-use areas like a kitchen or dining table. Unlike solid wood, it chips and cracks easily and is more vulnerable to water damage. This creates bubbling in the surface wood that is difficult or impossible to repair.
Solid woods on the other hand, are more water resistant because of the finish we use. Woods like white oak are also naturally non-porous, making water damage rare. Solid wood is also more easily repairable than veneer furniture because you can sand and refinish it. This gives solid wood furniture a much longer life than veneer furniture.
Solid wood is more durable and holds more value over time than veneer wood. Our timeless Amish dining tables will maintain both their appearance and function much longer than veneer furniture.
We encourage you to invest in our heirloom quality solid wood dining sets. Their beauty and durability will last your family for decades and earn you the thanks of future generations.
