Choosing Solid Walnut for Dining Chairs
Walnut wood is one of the more expensive domestic hardwoods for good reason. Its color and grain are highly desirable, but the trees grow slower compared to other species. This makes the demand high and supply low, causing a higher price.
Black walnut wood is popular because of its unique color tones and grain. The sapwood is a light, creamy color that contrasts greatly with the heartwood. From light coffee brown to deep chocolate, walnut heartwood is especially gorgeous and unique.
The heartwood also displays unusual, beautiful undertones of red, gray, and purple. Like cherry wood, walnut color also changes over time. Instead of darkening, it lightens slightly to a honey or golden brown. This makes it ideal for antique pieces, where aging enhances color variation and general elegance.
We offer a mix of sap and heart wood as well as an entirely heartwood option for each walnut piece. The former gives dramatic color contrast, while the latter is more formal and uniform.
Walnut grain pattern is uncommonly diverse with more range than other wood species. It can be straight and uniform in some places, and highly figured with curls and waves in other spots. Walnut also features streaks, knots and burls that add to the complexity of the wood pattern.
As for durability, walnut is strong and stable, making it ideal for high end furniture like ours. Resistant to decay, walnut is also long lasting and shock resistant. This combined with its beautiful appearance makes walnut wood an excellent choice for any dining area.
We offer a variety of stains for each wood species available. Natural walnut is the most popular because the original wood color with purple and red streaks is beautiful. However, our Cocoa Light stain is also a common choice for walnut. This stain makes the entire piece appear darker and more uniform so the wood grain pattern is the focal point.
High Quality Dark Walnut Kitchen Chairs
Our Amish black walnut dining chairs are heirloom quality and feature beautiful, timeless designs. Each is handmade by Amish experts with skill and dedication. Some of our favorite walnut kitchen chairs include the Curlew, Eagle, Arlington, and Belmont styles.
The Curlew Walnut Dining Chair features a steamed and bent back with Shaker style tapered legs. Three boards bend along the back of the chair and the top has a slight, graceful curve. This chair style pairs especially well with more elegant tables like the Carlisle and Parson Turned Leg styles.
Our Eagle Walnut Dining Chair is another excellent choice. Available with a wrought iron detail along the back of the chair, this style pairs well with the Alexandria table. The chair design features gentle curves and tapered legs. It also is available with both a fabric seat and chair back.
The Arlington Dark Walnut Kitchen Chair is a more traditional option. It features slightly tapered legs and a steamed and bent back for added comfort. Two wide boards connected by an arch make up the chair back. The Arlington style looks great with any of our Mission, Shaker, or Farmhouse style tables.
This style is also available with a straight chair top. This replaces the arch with a simple, straight horizontal board. The Arlington appears more modern and sleek with a straight chair top.
The Belmont Walnut Dining Chair is another unique choice. The legs taper along an outward facing right angle and the back curves for comfort and style. Two boards meet a dipped arch to form the chair back that features both gentle curves and straight lines.
Many of our walnut dining chairs are available with a fabric seat or with added chair arms. Either of these additions make great accent chairs to place at the ends of a table. For a round table, consider accent chairs opposite each other or have all chairs match.
Mid Century Walnut Dining Chairs and Matching Tables
The Mid Century Modern style typically features furniture with gentle, organic curves, tapered legs, and clean lines. Designs are not usually ornamental because functionality is most important for this style. This movement spanned from the 1940s through the 1960s. Today, designs from this era are still a popular, vintage-looking choice.
The Laker Black Walnut Dining Chair is an excellent example of Mid Century Modern design. It features a gentle curve in the back legs of the seat as well as across the chair back. The front legs taper and the lines of the top of the chair are especially clean and neat.
This chair style pairs particularly well with the Monroe Mid Century Extending Dining Table. The table legs taper while maintaining a straight, outward facing line for a modern look. The tabletop is rectangular with distinct lines as well.
Another great option is the Windsor Mid Century Walnut Dining Chair. The back legs feature a gentle curve like the Laker style, but the chair back itself is almost an oval shape. This organic bend combined with the tapered legs are highly reminiscent of antique Mid Century Modern furniture.
The Windsor style chair well compliments the Mid Century Modern Walnut Round Dining Table. This table features a pedestal base with four legs that meet at the top and branch out from there. The gentle obtuse angles of each leg as well as their gradual taper pairs well with any chair from this era.
The 48 inch round size of this table is perfect for a walnut dining chair set for 4 people. Or, the 42 inch round option creates a fine conversation set for 2.
The Cordelle Mid Century Walnut Dining Chair is another excellent choice. This unusual style features a rare contrast of line types. The back legs are diagonal and straight while the chair back dramatically curves around the sitter.
Each of these Mid Century Walnut Dining Chairs pairs well with either table we offer of the same era. Mix and match dining chairs to find which of our styles most suit your taste.
Mid Century Modern Round Table and Cordelle Chairs in Natural Walnut Wood

Choosing a white fabric seat for any of these chairs is an excellent choice with natural walnut wood. The white fabric accentuates the color contrast between heart and sap wood. The natural chocolate and coffee tones stand out even more against a white seat.
