Why Choose a Walnut Dining Room Table?
Walnut is an excellent choice for a solid wood dining table because of its beautiful appearance and high durability. This species is more expensive than other domestic hardwoods because it is in high demand, but limited supply. This is because walnut trees grow slower than other kinds of trees.
Walnut wood is darker than other kinds with a rich, deep chocolate hue. Its sapwood tends to be a lighter, creamier color while the heartwood ranges from a golden brown to a dark brown. This contrast in the heartwood is clear in our Rockford Walnut Extendable Dining Table.
Not only the color of walnut wood, but the grain pattern as well is desirable for a dining set. It typically features uniform swirls, waves, and straight lines. However, burls are common in walnut wood as well. These come from knots on the tree which result in a beautiful bird's eye unique to each piece.
Walnut has a Janka hardness rating of 1010 pounds. It would take 1010 pounds of force to embed a steel ball halfway into the wood. Because of the natural oils it produces, walnut heartwood is also resistant to decay and rot. These oils also protect walnut wood from moisture, insects, warping, and shrinking.
An interesting fact is that engineers used black walnut wood to create airplane propellers during the first World War. Its resistance to warping, ability to withstand stress, and natural durability made it perfect for the job.
Walnut dining tables feature beautiful natural wood patterns and are sturdy. This wood is a great choice for any dining area.
Solid Walnut Dining Tables at Upstate Amish
Our black walnut dining tables are the product of expert craftsmanship and dedication. They are heirloom quality and display beautiful color and wood grain.
Black walnut is a domestic hardwood that originates in the central and eastern United States. The highest quality trees are usually from Ohio and Iowa. However, California has beautiful species of walnut as well including the rare claro walnut.
All our pieces are fully customizable, including dining tables. If you choose walnut wood, you can decide between natural and cocoa light stain, or explore other options. If you love a specific style table we offer, but need to adjust the dimensions for your space, we can do that. We will work with you to create and deliver your custom pieces.
Rectangular Walnut Dining Table Options
We offer a variety of dining table sizes and styles. Our rectangular dining tables range from 48 inches to 96 and many are extendable by an extra 1-2 feet. The extendable tables have self-storing leaves that when extended, blend with the wood grain for a seamless addition. Our round tables also have extendable options and are available in a variety of sizes.
An excellent choice for any dining room is our Rockford Walnut Wood Extending Dining Table. This dark walnut dining table has a solid black metal base which contrasts well with the nuances in color made by the wood grain. This table is 42 inches wide and measures 76 to 108 inches long depending on whether you choose the extendable leaves or not.
Another option is our Carlisle Double Pedestal Walnut Wood Extending Dining Table. It features a simple table top with a more complex pedestal base. Four legs curve to meet at the center of the table and support a small platform. It features optional extension leaves and a beveled edge.
Round Walnut Table Tops
An excellent option for a dining space is our Alberta Walnut Wood Round Extending Dining Table. This style is popular because it is available in 60, 66, and 72 inches round, all with an optional extension leaf. This is the only 72 inch round table we offer. The wide pedestal base can support the weight of a large solid wood table top because four sturdy pillars connect at the center.
Our Round Whiskey Walnut Wood Single Barrel Pub Table is a unique choice for any space. It features a repurposed whiskey barrel base with a walnut table top. The center of the table top is glass, allowing for a top view of the barrel. This interesting combination is complete with a black metal foot rail and measures 48, 54, or 60 inches round.
Live Edge Walnut Dining Tables

The above picture shows a black walnut live edge dining table top at our store in Seneca. The term "live edge" or natural edge refers to the shape of the table top. Instead of a perfect rectangle, the shape is the same as the actual outer edge of the walnut tree. This creates a rough edge with curves that are unique to your table because no two trees are exactly the same.
This specific live edge cut is a two board book match table top. Instead of one board that spans the length of the tree, this style shows two cut from the same side of the tree. They are roughly symmetrical and meet at the center of the table top.
While this specific piece is black walnut, we also offer claro walnut live edge tables. This species is a rarer cross of Circassian walnut and Californian black walnut. It grows on the West Coast and typically shows a more figured, curly, and wavy grain than black walnut.
Its colors are less uniform ranging from light brown to chocolate brown with some red or purple hues. Like other species of walnut, it is durable and rot resistant. Because of its rarity and intricate, dramatic wood pattern, claro walnut is more expensive than black walnut.
We don't offer live edge tables on our website because the price, dimensions, and appearance differ for each piece. If you are interested, come visit our store or reach out through our contact us option.
You can leave your phone number and email address and let us know you're interested in live edge tables. We will get back to you with information about what pieces are currently in the store. Or, we can start working on a custom order for you.
Aside from walnut, we also offer maple and sycamore live edge tables. Each is sure to be beautifully unique and heirloom quality.
Please contact us if you're interested in a live edge table, including one with epoxy filling. We have other live edge tables in our store with natural cracks and imperfections. These imperfections create a unique piece when filled with our epoxy.
